The Latest on Home Technology

We're here to help you navigate the complex world of home technology. Peruse our blog for the latest information about the solutions that matter most to you.

What You’ll Need for True Ultra HD in Your Atlanta Home Theater

You know you want it; the eye-catching, pixel-popping clarity of Ultra HD. Today's home theaters won't impress anybody without the sheer spectacle of nearly 4K resolution. But achieving that beautiful look in your Atlanta private cinema is about more than just the latest television or projector display – your home needs the right infrastructure to support UHD content. In this blog we'll take you through the right equipment you'll need to get the most out of your home theater.

A Strong Network

If you want to control any part of your connected home, a strong network is key. Smart home technology – which is commonly referred to as the "Internet of Things" – needs more than just intelligent devices and happy thoughts to work effectively, it needs enough bandwidth to support every connection without slowing it down. The same is true for streaming your favorite content in Ultra HD.

According to content delivery network Akamai, only about 21 percent of U.S. homes had enough bandwidth to support 4K content in September 2015. But there's good news: your home simply needs a network upgrade to support all of those delightful pixels.

The home networking experts at Pakedge have already come up with some great solutions, like the wireless WX-1 Gigabit AC access point. While we usually suggest wired connections (because they are more reliable and durable) this little guy can expand your bandwidth up to four times. Needless to say you'll be able to stream plenty of great content with it.

Upgrade Your Cables

Question: what's the one thing you'll find in every home theater regardless of size, shape or equipment? The answer is cables, and you're going to need some new ones if you want to support UHD content. That's why the HDMI Forum – the group that determines HDMI specs – came up with HDMI 2.0.

The new cable is specifically designed to support 4K UHD content, and the secret is increased bandwidth. Even if you're not streaming content over the Internet, you'll need a high-bandwidth connection between your 4K Blu-ray player and your 4K projector or TV. Plus, the 2.0 actually allows you to run two separate shows in full 1080p HD on the same display simultaneously – a strange feature but a cool fact.

Also, there's already been a few upgrades to the HDMI 2.0 – like the 2.0a. This version is specifically designed to support HDR content, which can make a huge difference in your viewing experience. As the technology continues to grow, we inch closer and closer to a 4K future.
