What is IMAX Enhanced?
IMAX Enhanced is a certification and licensing program. Its primary goal is to help consumers discern which high-end electronics will best showcase the company’s 4K Ultra HD content and DTS audio mixing. The secondary objective is elevating filmmaker's visions by making sure premium IMAX-remastered content looks just the way they envisioned when viewed in a home theater.
How will they do this? IMAX is pairing up with DTS sound experts and experienced Hollywood technicians to identify the top products on the market. What are they looking for? These A/V products should offer clear pictures and brighter images, fully immersive 3-dimensional sound and make it easier to scale images on larger displays.
How Can You Get It?
To enjoy IMAX Enhanced content, all you have to do is use their certified products in your home theater. Thankfully, our partner Sony was one of the first companies to sign up for the program.
“We are proud to join the other global consumer electronics and entertainment leaders as a launch partner for the IMAX Enhanced program and to be able to provide a wide variety of televisions and projectors designed to deliver the filmmaker’s intent,” said Mike Fasulo, president and COO of Sony Electronics.
Right now, Sony has a variety of TV and projector lines that meet the performance requirements set forth by IMAX. These will include an IMAX Mode – much like the Netflix mode found in the latest Master Series TVs — specifically designed to optimize IMAX original content.
Among the products that currently qualify for IMAX Enhanced are Master Series TVs, the A8F and A13 OLED TVs and the X9OOF 4K HDR TVs. If you’d rather have a screen and projector combination in your home theater, there are a lot of options there for you as well. These include Sony’s latest 4K HDR projectors released at CEDIA 2018: the flagship VPL-VW995ES, the VPL-VW69GES which provides Picture Position Memory to adjust to the ideal aspect ratio easily, and the more affordable VPL-VW295ES that includes lag reduction ideal for gamers.
Soon, you'll also be able to add IMAX Enhanced A/V receivers to your home theater. Sony will release a firmware update in the Spring of 2019 to optimize content to feature IMAX’s immersive DTS audio technology. The models receiving the firmware include the STR-ZA5000ES, STR-ZA3100ES, STR-ZA2100ES, and STR-ZA1100ES.
