Home theater and home entertainment rooms today is a revolution. At its best it provides an experience that transcends the cinema experience, making it something more accessible, more personal and more fun. The total home theater experience combines audio, video, lighting, shades, AV gear and temperature control with one multi-function remote control.
You can walk into a big box retailer and pick up a projector, receiver, speakers, projector mount, speaker wires, and a screen. But you want to make sure that what you selected is not over-sized or undersized for your specific environment. This is where most of the inexperienced installers make mistakes that end up costing the home theater owner in addition to producing less then desired results.
It seems as though every custom home being built today has an area designated as a home theater or media room. Or as the economy has changed over the past few years, more homeowners are staying in the homes longer and are spending the time to renovate existing spaces. We are often contacted by a homeowner during the construction process of the build out of a new home theater.
The room in which you enjoy your audio and video system can be as important to the end result as is the equipment itself. Every home theater room or media room has a sound character that contributes enormously to the overall performance. How your room absorbs, reflects or diffuses sound, the placement of the speakers and seating position and the calibration of the equipment all can be optimized for maximum accuracy and performance.
Now you've got your home theater, let’s add to the “ambiance” with home theater seating and accessories. An unfinished basement is a situation that we love. It allows the home theater or media room to be designed to the perfect size and to be placed in the perfect location.
There are many factors when locating the home theater in a basement. Some customers prefer their home theater or home entertainment room to be the focal point of the entire lower level. Others want it to be almost hidden and out of the way. How is adjacent space to the sides and above to be used? Should mom's home office be right next door? Should the washer & dryer be right above the projector location? What about natural existing acoustical isolation factors? These are just a few of the concerns that should be addressed.
There are also many factors that go into the design & construction of a basement home theater. Drainpipes, water pipes, valves, ductwork, HVAC lines, support columns, support beams, sump pump, radon vent systems, gas lines, phone lines, etc. all need to be thought about. Proper access to water heaters, furnaces, air conditioning, main electrical panels, well tanks, oil tanks, clean-outs, etc. all need to be considered. Should the home theater air duct system be on the same zone as the kitchen or the master bedroom suite? What would make the most sense? We can help you make the right choices.
Quite often we design the entire lower level of a home with the home theater as an integral part of the overall picture. A sports fan may want an open theater plan with the screen visible from the bar and pool table areas. A movie buff may want a separate movie theater complete with a lobby and concession stand. It all just depends on what you want.
